We are spiritual beings. Our souls reside in physical bodies. These bodies come in many shapes, sizes, hair texture, and pigmentations. God knows our physical appearance but God is more focused on the inner person and not what is visible on the outside. Knowing this about God, why are some people offended by the physical appearance of any specific group?
God loves diversity. Look around. There are 10,000 species of birds. Insects are divided into 925,000 species. Fish have 33,600 species. Life is filled with variety. That diverse spectrum of life brings complexity and beauty. Rather than search for ways to bring conformity or uniformity, let us focus on the beauty of what God has given us. My natural hair texture should not be an affront to anyone nor should I be upset with someone who chooses to wear a modified hair style.
When we celebrate diversity per God’s plan for the world, we acknowledge the sovereignty of God. We are made in the spiritual image and likeness of God, having the breath of God in us. Our physical appearance is to be celebrated. The outer person shows diversity but the inner person that matters most is interconnected to everyone because of the breath of God in each of us.
Celebrate someone today who is outside of your common physical appearance. Acknowledge that beauty comes in different body types. Create today a space in our houses of worship where we preach the love of God through Christ Jesus in a space that acknowledges and celebrates diversity. There are almost 8 billion people in the world. That is 8 billion different expressions of the love of God.
