I am deeply disturbed by the recent killing of an unarmed woman by a Fort Worth police officer in her own home. I am particularly upset that about the immediate attempt to justify her death by the “discovery” of a gun in her bedroom. She did not have the gun in her hand. She was not in the bedroom when she was shot. Instead of admitting there was an error that needs to be investigated, authorities circle the wagons.
How have we come to this place where life is not precious? Why are people expendable? If we truly believe Jeremiah 1:5, then everyone is special to God. In this fallen world some lives are devalued and others are deemed precious. In reality God loves and honors all.
Fear and loathing have replaced understanding and love. Territoriality and tribalism have replaced openness and community building. God is not pleased.
God realizes people will make mistakes. Abraham, Moses, David, Solomon, Zechariah, Peter, Edoida, and Syntyche, as well as others, all made mistakes but were used by God. We must stop making critical mistakes and not owning them. We must stop covering up for those mistakes but step up as people of God to help people accept responsibility for their actions. It should not matter if the perpetrator has an official title.
