A new year is upon us. Some of us celebrated the transition form 2019 to 2020 at Watch Night services. Others celebrated at a large outdoor event. Others stayed home and woke up to a new year and new decade. However you chose to celebrate, the new year/new decade dawned no matter where you were or what you did. So now what is next?
Do you follow through on resolutions? Did you make any resolutions? What is your focus for this year? May I suggest 7 focal points for 2020 that aren’t resolutions but a reordering and reorienting of for a new year/new decade. 1) Do our part, not every part; 2) Give what we do our best effort; 3) Set a goal and hit it; 4) Be an intentional giver; 5) Be disciplined 6) Get some rest; and 7) Keep praising God.
1) We cannot do it all. Let everyone’s gifts be used generously. We grow when our gifts are put in full use. Let’s not stunt anyone’s growth. There is work for us all.
2) God wants our best. If we stay focused on our gifts we give our work the best effort. Giving our best shows others that consistent excellence glorifies God.
3) To make progress we have to set goals. Goals are targets. When we take excellent aim with our gifts at those targets, success is the outcome.
4) We should give our gifts intentionally. Make a plan of how you will give this year. Stick to the plan.
5) Discipline is necessary. We cannot stay focused without being disciplined. We must not let distractions take us off target.
6) We have to get consistent rest. Work hard. Rest easy. God does not want us to overwork ourselves.
7) Keep praising God. The path we take will not be smooth. When we keep praising God we claim victory for our goals even with roadblocks, potholes, and distractions in our way. Shout hallelujah anyhow.
Welcome to a new decade!
